The Essential Coyote Neighbour

When I encounter a coyote neighbor, it brightens my day. I feel fortunate to catch a glimpse of these elusive canids and to know they are out there in the fields, ravines, and forests, living their lives. It saddens me when I hear calls to kill or remove them simply because some believe they do not belong. Negative encounters result from irresponsible human actions, such as allowing dogs to run freely and chase wildlife, feeding coyotes, and development that destroys their habitats. These actions can also diminish the experiences for responsible individuals who make efforts to coexist. It reflects a deeper imbalance with nature when some people refuse to make even minor changes to their behavior and instead advocate for violent solutions. Empathy and small accommodations can help save their lives.
